Phase 1 & 2 – This 107 home, south facing brown field development, on the north bank of the River Tyne, forms one of the three Western Gateway sites located two miles east of the city centre in Walker, Newcastle.
Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder funded, the proposals are for a mixed tenure of 88 No. houses and 19 No. apartments.
Phase 3 & 4 – 76 new 1-4 Bedroom houses, apartments and bungalows contributed to a wider mixed use initiative in the heart of Walker.
Contextual response – strong street frontages, tree lined boulevards, pedestrian walkway links and a central public space contributed significantly to the cohesion between new and existing residents, with passive surveillance optimised to achieve Secured by Design accreditation.
Public Realm – Family focused Home Zones and Shared Surface mews courtyards maximised the amenity value of the public realm.
With a dynamic contemporary architectural language, these developments kick-started much needed housing market renewal in the Walker area.
