Manchester Bungalows, North Manchester

Funded by the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) the project delivered 32 exemplar 2-bed bungalows across 6 infill sites in North Manchester.

Won in competition, the brief was to create modern, innovative and flexible bungalows that met the City Council’s stringent accessibility (DfA2) and environmental requirements.

Flexibility in use was a key design driver. An acoustic folding partition, between principal rooms, allows flexibility to meet varying residents needs. High levels of natural daylight penetration and excellent passive surveillance combine with a strong contemporary aesthetic to create a safe living environment, development identity and a sense of place.

Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 was achieved by utilising highly insulated timber frame construction, Green Guide “A+” rated materials, solar thermal hot water, rainwater harvesting & low flow taps controlling potable water useage, sun-pipes, low energy lighting, low user interface controls and recycling & composting bins.

The development achieved both Secured by Design and Building for Life (Silver) Awards.
