Crewe Civic and Cultural Space, Crewe
The aims of this project were to provide new City Centre Public Realm in Crewe and extend the Law Court Building in order to maintain public access is part of a wider project known as Crewe Civic & Cultural Space.
Client: Cheshire East Council
Contractor: MC Construction
The Court Building was originally accessed at first floor level via a raised concourse which was used as a public car park on its upper and lower deck. Following the demolition of this concourse to make way for the new public realm, a solution was sought to maintain pedestrian access to the Court at its upper level. This proposal successfully deals with the transition from the new public realm via a new extension housing a lift, stairs and all the security requirements expected of a crown court facility. The external aesthetic borrows from the existing red brick of the court building and the cladding of the new Heritage Centre constructed on the opposite side of the new square.
