The brief for this project was to retain and refurbish an existing Queen Anne style property and provide an extension with a large open plan living and dining space with strong links to an established formal garden area. A new garage and additional bedroom were to be incorporated.
While the street frontage is more in keeping with the aesthetic of the existing building, with the formation of a glazed circulation link as a break between the solid building masses, the extension is a contemporary minimal design which wraps around a significant magnolia tree as a visual centre piece.
The front elevation of the existing building has been cleared of the unnecessary drain pipework with the render, roof tiles and leaded light windows replaced to take the building back more to its original appearance.
The internal design aims to marry the distinctly different building styles, providing a subtle and sympathetic gradient from old to new, retaining original features with simple modern insertions of forms, lighting and services to link the corridors at ground and first floor levels through to the glazed link.
The project was completed in March 2015.
